PWMSA MOURNS THE PASSING OF THE MOVEMENT’S NATIONAL CONVENOR, PROFESSOR HLENGIWE MKHIZE

The Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa (PWMSA) learnt with great sadness the passing of its National Convenor, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize (69) on Thursday morning, 16th September 2021.

The passing of our National Convenor came as great shock to the movement as well as to the country at large. Professor Mkhize was a sister, a wife, a mother and a grandmother but to us she was a true advocate for women rights and gender activists.

She believed in women empowerment, and emancipation. She championed programmes which ensured that women are equipped with relevant skills for economic participation and also for them to be self-sufficient.

Financial, ICT, and agricultural skills were some of the skills she advocated for and ensured that women, especially those coming from deep rural areas possessed for a meaningful economic participation. She has been at the helm of PWMSA since 2012 until final demise this week. She successfully and honestly led the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa (PWMSA), promoting transformation of the South African society into one that is truly non-racial and non-sexist, through the advancement of women’s socioeconomic, political and cultural rights.

The National Convenor was a great source of inspiration and promoted linkages between PWMSA women, developmental organisation which promoted women’s rights as well as other women organisations. She was a unifier and always promoted unity within the movement. She never missed an opportunity to empower others through her knowledge, background and ideals gained through her previous portfolios. Indeed, her passing is a great loss to the movement, struggle fraternity and the women of South Africa.

The movement recognises and greatly appreciate the contributions Professor Mkhize made to change lives of women and their rights. We trust that women will continue to harvest from her great tree of quality leadership and services for legacy not to perish but to be passed on from generation to generation.

We send our deepest condolences to the Mkhize family, relatives, comrades and friends. May her soul rest in peace and family strengthened to keep her memories alive.

Allow us to share Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize’s official Profile as given by government and the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.
