PWMSA WELCOMES NINOW SENTENCE
Media Statement - PWMSA Welcomes Nicholas Ninow Sentence
Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa welcomes the maximum
sentence that has been given to convicted rapist Nicholas Ninow who was sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge Mokhine of the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday 17th October 2019.
Ninow’s sentencing comes a month after he was found guilty on two counts of rape, possession of drugs and defeating the ends of justice in connection with the rape of a then 7-year-old girl in the female toilets of a restaurant in Silverton, Pretoria in September 2018.
Gender-Based Violence and Femicide is the most serious crime that needs to be tackled without fear or favour. The after effects of these acts leave lifetime wounds and painful reminders to the victims. We are esteemed that finally justice has been served for the young girl and her family.
South Africa does not need people like Nicholas Ninow, who can cause so much harm on an innocent young girl. As PMWSA we say, no one deserves to be raped, minor, young or old. We will use our unified voices to fight child abuse, just as we did when we made inputs regarding Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.
Every rapist should be granted a harsh sentence. We hope this sentence will
send a clear message to perpetrators who think women and children are their playgrounds. To the young girl and her family, we hope that this outcome brings you closer to some form of healing from this trauma. PWMSA will remain at all times a voice for voiceless and an advocate of a South Africa safe for all.
