Vaal Student Killer Sentenced

Media Statement

The National Convenor of Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa Prof Hlengiwe Mkhize and the entire organisation welcomes the sentence of 22 years imprisonment handed by the Johannesburg High Court to the accused for killing Ms. Tinyiko Ngobeni on Tuesday.

Ngobeni from Katlehong, was a Vaal University of Technology student. She was brutally murdered by her boyfriend Lunga Gumede who fetched her from her family residence in 2016. Six days later her decomposing body was found in the bushes near road R55 and at the time of her death, she was 10 weeks pregnant.

Justice has been served for Tinyiko but as an organisation, we want all the
perpetrators of Gender Based Violence and Femicide to be given harsher sentences and no parole to set an example that there is no room in the society for such people.

Women continue to live in fear and continue to be victims of Gender Based Violence and Femicide and that cannot be tolerated. Although for the family there is no closure, the memory of their daughter lives on with mixed feelings of joy and sadness but at least the perpetrator has been held accountable by the court of law.
